Firing a gunshot is the most universally recognized signal for help because it can be heard from a far distance and is an obvious sign of distress. Leaving a trail of crumbs or making a large X on the ground may not be obvious to all rescuers who may not understand the sign. Three of any signal, such as blasts from a whistle, may be a recognized signal, but there is no guarantee that all rescuers will know this signal. Therefore, the best option for ensuring that all rescuers recognize the signal and respond appropriately is to fire a gunshot.
